PANTONE 2020 Color of the Year Classic Blue

PANTONE’s 2020 color of the year is 19-4052 Classic Blue, a color inspired by the sea and its calming, confident nature. As we move into the new decade, Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, notes that Classic Blue is a “color that anticipates what’s going to happen next.” At the same time, it instills calm, confidence, and connection. She adds that the sea inspires the selection, suggesting that layering sea-inspired colors will create texture and interest.

One can feel that connection to the sea in this relaxing whole home remodel. Natural wood textures, crisp white walls, and Classic Blue accents give this home a clean, bright, and coastal look. In the living room, a blue glass tiled fireplace contrasted by the natural wood mantle gives the appearance of driftwood in the ocean. A striped blue and white area rug adds to the nautical look.

The color palette continues in the rest of the home, creating a calmness to this vacation home. In the dining room, a natural wood table is paired with a Classic Blue table runner. The view of the harbor from the large sliding glass windows elevates the look.

In the main floor bathroom, sea glass inspired tiles in the shower bring in just the right amount of blue to this space. These, combined with the lighter blue tiles in the shower inlet, bring texture to the space and give the look of calming ocean waves.

Moving upstairs to the bedrooms, the Classic Blue accents give the space a peaceful feeling. The master bedroom pairs deep blue glass lamps and white lampshades with round natural wood bedside tables. Deep blue velvet pillows on the bed complement a knitted light blue and white throw blanket. Grey accents in this room give the space a foggy ocean morning aesthetic, as highlighted in the picture above the bed.

PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue is often used in interior design and has proven to be a favorite in homes. It offers a feeling that is both comforting and relatable, making it a go-to color choice. The color is bold, but dependable and consistent enough that it can be used in a variety of styles of homes. It aligns nicely with interior design’s gradual return to traditional elegance but it also can express modern boldness. In this unstable time that 2020 has presented us with thus far, Classic Blue is the stable foundation that brings us peace, calm, and constancy.
